Can Mosques, the name of this place before 1929

If you searched for “Can Mosques” and ended up here, the short answer is yes: it exists. It is at number 49 Carrer de la Cera, in El Raval, and since 1929 it has been called Can Lluís. But before it had that name, the place was already feeding the neighbourhood under another one, far less elegant and far better remembered.

An inn with a nickname

Before 1929, these same premises housed a humble inn that everyone knew as Can Mosques (“House of Flies”). The nickname was literal: there were containers of salt cod at the entrance and, in the heat, the fish attracted flies. It was not a name for a sign but a street name, the kind the neighbours give and that sticks forever.

The Raval of those years was the old Barri Xino: boarding houses, workshops, working families, the Sant Antoni Market next door and the theatres of the Paral·lel a few minutes away. An inn like Can Mosques had a simple, essential job: to give a hot meal to the people who lived and worked nearby.

In 1929 the inn was renamed Can Lluís. The name changed, not the cooking: casseroles, salt cod, pulses, the dish of the day.

A name that never went away

Can Mosques never quite disappeared. It stayed in the neighbourhood’s memory and in the stories told over long lunches. Almost a hundred years later, it is being talked about again for an unexpected reason: television.

In 2026 the series “Ravalear”, inspired by this house, premiered on HBO Max. In the series the restaurant is called Can Mosques, the name of this place before 1929. Can Lluís is still on Carrer de la Cera.

Can Mosques is called Can Lluís today

If you want to see the house, it is open every day at Carrer de la Cera, 49, for lunch and dinner. The tiles, the columns and the old photographs are still in place, and the kitchen serves the classics: cap i pota, cannelloni, salt cod, pig’s trotters with snails and crema catalana.

It used to be called Can Mosques. Now it is called Can Lluís. The table is the same.
